Health & Safety

General
Our number one priority at YMCA Kanawana is the well-being, health and safety of your child. YMCA Kanawana helped found the Québec Camping Association in the 1950s and has been an accredited member ever since. As a QCA member, Kanawana adheres to a strict set of norms and guidelines related to all aspects of residential camping. As a member of the family of YMCA Camps across North America, YMCA Kanawana follows even stricter guidelines and best practices which ensure that our camp is a safe and nurturing environment.

Health Services
Camp YMCA Kanawana has two full time Health Care professionals who provide training to our Staff, and who administer care to campers on a 24-hour basis. Kanawana has a fully equipped health center with 8 beds and is located less than 10 kilometers from the Medical Clinic in St. Sauveur. YMCA Kanawana benefits from the services of consultant doctors who offer advice in the development of best practices for the running of our infirmary and back country wilderness First Aid protocols as well as advice on a case by case basis during the summer for our Camp Nurse and/or Canoe Trip Leaders when needed.

Staff Training & Certification
We take great pride in selecting & training our staff. Many of our staff members have been campers at YMCA Kanawana, providing them with a greater understanding of the experience your child will have – and how to make it the best experience possible for them. We look for staff who are passionate about working with children and who want to make a difference in a child’s life. All our staff are chosen because we feel their values reflect those of YMCA (see Mission & Values).

All our staff are required to:
  • Pass a police background check.
  • Attend an 8-day staff training which includes trainings in: emergency procedure,  animation skills, special needs training, lesson planning as well as an orientation in our policies, approach and values.
  • Have valid First Aid & CPR certifications.
  • Learn all YMCA Kanawana's Emergency Protocols.
  • Participate in an on-site training in the administering of epinephrine  for life threatening allergic reactions.
  • All specialized staff require additional certifications (see Tripping Safety below)
Food & Nutrition
An important part of our health strategy at YMCA Kanawana is to ensure that campers eat well during their stay with us. Our Food Services team offers tasty and well-balanced meals, and a registered Dietician reviews and approves our menus to ensure that they meet all nutritional standards. (For specialized dietary requirements please see "Allergy Management Plan" below). Kanawana’s meals are hearty and healthy, and give kids the energy they need! In an effort to promote healthy living we are looking to reduce sugar intake of kids at camp. As such we will only offer candy snacks once a week. We will continue to have fresh fruit and water available to campers throughout the day.

Allergy Management Plan
YMCA Kanawana has an allergy management plan, and we make every effort to accommodate campers with food allergies. Vegetarian, lactose free, and pork free options are available, as well as extra special care and attention to food allergies.
-We track all allergies of campers
-Epinephrine available at various locations in our camp
-All overnights and trips have epinephrine shots available
-All staff are trained to give epinephrine shots
-No nut products are allowed into camp.
-Our kitchen posts a list of all campers with food allergies and their needs.
We are accustomed to having campers with severe food allergies and make every effort to ensure we do not buy or have any nut products on site. It is, however, impossible to guarantee our site is 100% nut free.

Trip Safety

All trip routes are preset with evacuation protocols allowing us to reach our groups at any point along their route. Trip leaders carry various types of communication devices (EPIRB's and/or satellite phones and/or GPS tacking systems) according to the distance and the type of trip undertaken. They also contact camp at various checkpoints along the trip.

All our tripping staff are required to:

  • Participate in a 9-day training specifically designed for canoe tripping - on top of the regular 8-day staff training for all Kanawana staff. (This training includes group dynamic and team-building workshops, technical outdoor trainings along with group management on trip).
  • Have a current Wilderness First Responder training, (an 80 hour First-Aid course specifically designed for outdoor professionals) along with CPR certification. All Whitewater guides are required to have Whitewater Rescue Technician (WRT)certification.
  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of our risk management and health care policies.
